Micro-Blogging

Micro-Blogging is one of the newest forms of blogging. Micro-blogging allows people to blog from mobile devices using text messaging or SMS. It’s regularly publishing of small pieces of content on the web. This form of blogging is usually limited to 140 characters per entry. This can be done using instant messaging software or a cell phone.

Micro-blogging allows posting of short thoughts and ideas to a personal blog or a Micro business blog. This is actually closer to a stream of consciousness then a well formed article. It is a more immediate and spontaneous form of blogging.

The three popular Micro-Blogging services today are Twitter, Jaiku and Pownce.

Twitter: Founded as a San Francisco start-up in March 2006 and launched as a product in July 2006. Twitter is the most popular of this form of social networking.

Jaiku: This is the primary competitor to Twitter. Jaiku goes a step further by serving as a mobile RSS aggregator.

Pownce: which is Digg’s founder Kevin Rose’s latest venture. Pownce is the latest entry and has learned from Twitter and Jaiku with even greater functionality. It even lets you attach mp3 and download links to a message

What can you say in 140 characters? “Web 2.0 is turning to Micro-blogging. It forces bloggers to be brief and to the point. Ideas are now being provided in smaller micro-chunks.” -140 Characters

On micro business blogging : “So what if your company’s blog only reaches a few dozen people a day. If they’re the right people, the payoff is obvious.” -Seth Godin
