Components of a Good Logo Design
Why should you have a logo? It is part of your company branding to help people remember your company. A good logo design is one that when properly promoted can be recognized with or without the company name next to it. A logo is part of the company marketing strategy and greets a prospective buyer like an old friend.
So what makes up a good logo? It is simple, memorable, represents the company and has the illusion of action. Let’s use the Nike “swoosh” logo as an example of one of the all time great logos.

Simple means that it is not overly complex, can be reduced to a small size on a business card and doesn’t have many complex and competing elements. Simple also means good contrast and a bold look. The Nike swoosh logo is an excellent example of simple.
Memorable means being distinctive, graphic (not just letters), not being cluttered in look and something that has a unique look. Again the Nike logo has a distinctive and unique look.
Represents the company means being able to relate the logo to the company. The Nike Logo was originally developed in 1971 as the stripe logo. It later became known as the “swoosh” to represent the sound of a runner going buy. The logo represents speed and grace. You can see how this relation of logo to company can evolve over time, but the correct elements are there.
Illusion of action means the logo has the appearance of motion and doesn’t just sit there. The Nike logo represents speed and motion. This can be the wind blowing, a key turning or a door opening. The challenge here is to keep it simple while still showing action.
A simple good logo may not be easy or quick to create, but it is powerful in your company’s branding for marketing strategies or Internet marketing. More on the history of the Nike logo.

This article is definitely worth considering as well before you start purchasing from an online logo design service. Very informative. And it’ll surely help you on deciding which site to choose from when the need arises. It is by WIRED Magazine: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.10/start.html?pg=13
They tested some logo design firms who cater to the online market (Logo Company, LogoDesignCreation.com, etc.). I’ve tried logodesigncreation and their work is very good considering their affordable price.
